The Charles Gray Room
Named after Charles Gray himself…
…the Charles Gray Room is our most popular private space within the Museum to hold a Wedding Breakfast. It comfortably holds up to 80 guests seated, making it an appealing and intimate space to spend time with your family and friends.
Usually a Top Table sits in front of a beautiful ornate wooden mantelpiece which dates back to the 1600s. Directly opposite the fireplace are three large doors which can also be opened to offer a vista over the museum galleries while you eat or dance the night away.

The Charles Gray room is located on the top floor of the Castle…
…next door to the Chapel and can be accessed by the staircase. Alternatively we have two lifts in the Castle which stop at the top floor. Toilets are located on the ground floor.
The Castle is fully accessible on the ground floor which is also where the disabled toilets are located. There is also Blue Badge parking nearby.

“We wanted a unique and fun setting to hold our wedding, and Colchester Castle fit the bill perfectly. The gorgeous ceremony space felt intimate and looked stunning even with very little decoration. We used the adjacent Charles Gray Room for our meal and we loved that we could open the large doors for a view out over the museum gallery while we ate. This also meant that guests arriving for the evening reception could listen to the speeches and not feel left out.“
“After our meal, the ceremony room was transformed into a dance floor and bar which comfortably fit our 150 guests. As we had free reign of the museum it meant guests really got into learning about the history of the castle – with several of them getting their hands on the dressing up box – this was fantastic as it meant that there were no ‘lulls’ in the day – there was always something to keep everyone entertained.“
